If your pet is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, we recommend seeking care at a dedicated emergency veterinary hospital.

Urgent Care vs. Emergency Care

To decide whether your pet needs urgent or emergency care, ask yourself:

  • Does this need attention soon, but isn’t immediately life-threatening?
  • Is this a true emergency requiring immediate, life-saving intervention?

Urgent care is for pets who are stable but require timely attention. Emergency hospitals are equipped to handle critical, life-threatening conditions that demand immediate intervention.

Conditions That Require Emergency Care

  • Not eating or drinking for more than 48 hours
  • Weak or rapid pulse
  • Choking or difficulty breathing
  • Bloating or distended abdomen
  • Fall from a height
  • Difficulty delivering puppies or kittens
  • Trauma (e.g., hit by a car)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Repeated seizures or paralysis
  • Excessive bleeding that won’t stop

If you’re unsure whether your pet’s condition qualifies as urgent, don’t hesitate to call us at Animal Hospital of South Bay Lawndale or Animal Hospital of South Bay Rolling Hills.

We’re here to help you decide the next best step for your pet’s health and comfort.
